Merit Badge Session Guidelines and Tips
Merit badges are an excellent way for a Boy Scout to learn a skill, explore a career, develop a hobby, or increase knowledge. Troop 58 Boy Scouts have many opportunities to earn merit badges year-round -- during summer camp, by attending merit badge sessions, or contacting a counselor on their own.
Every fall and spring, Troop 58 offers a series of merit badge sessions under the following guidelines:
Optional participation.
Small group size.
Sign-up preference given to First Class rank or higher.
Scheduled at a convenient time and place, usually 45 minutes before Boy Scout meetings at Davidson College Presbyterian Church.
Guidance by a registered Boy Scout counselor. Typically, a counselor is a Scout parent or a local citizen who has a special skill or interest in the merit badge subject.
Focus on eagle-required merit badges not available at summer camp with additional merit badge sessions offered on an occasional basis.
Sign-ups for workshops take place at Scout meetings.
Participating Scouts are expected to obtain and read the merit badge pamphlet on the subject before attending the session and work on requirements outside the session settings. Merit badge pamphlets are available on loan from the troop library or by purchase at authorized Scout stores.
Pease note that Scouts are encouraged to work on additional merit badges outside organized sessions. When a Scout is interested in earning a particular merit badge he should (1) obtain the Scoutmaster's approval, (2) find another Scout with similar interests to become his partner, (3) contact the troop merit badge coordinators who will then direct them to an appropriate merit badge counselor. Merit badge counselors must be registered with the BSA.
Before a session begins you will need the corresponding merit badge pamphlet on the subject. Pamphlets are available on loan through the troop library or you can purchase them at Boy Scouts of America stores in Charlotte or Kannapolis.
